It was recently announced that Roku is ending private channels<\/strong> in 2022.<\/p>\n

Private channels are non-certified channels that function on Roku\u2019s hardware but aren\u2019t officially supported in the Roku Channel Store.<\/p>\n

These non-certified (private) Roku channels<\/a> were once popular among Roku users wanting to access content that couldn\u2019t be found in Roku\u2019s official Channel Store.<\/p>\n

These private channels were not reviewed by Roku\u2019s team for technical requirements or compliance and often appealed to niche audiences.<\/p>\n

Roku Ending Private Channels \u2013 What Happened?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

According to an official press release<\/a> from Roku, the company states the following regarding private channels.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the release of the IDK and beta channels, <\/span>Roku will remove non-certified channels from the platform <\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Back in October of 2021, Roku announced the launch of an Independent Developer Kit (IDK), which will \u201cenable developers to explore the platform\u2019s capabilities and personalize their Roku experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the launch of their new IDK, Roku then decided to terminate non-certified (private) channels from their platform entirely.<\/p>\n

Roku then followed up with another press release<\/a> in November 2021 explaining their plan for removing private channels on February 23, 2022<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cRoku is sunsetting non-certified channels. Specifically, on February 23rd, 2022, all non-certified channels will be disabled across all Roku devices. Roku is sunsetting non-certified channels to better align with industry standards on their developer QA testing of channels, and limiting distribution of channels to a small set of users.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
